This May at Dental Associates of Delaware we want to help raise awareness for two separate yet equally important causes. This month is dedicated to raise awareness for both mental health as well as Lupus. Our Dental Associates of Delaware family feels it is important to do our part to help spread awareness and get people talking!
Mental Health Awareness
Mental Health America and their affiliates have deemed May as Mental Health Month with the purpose of raising awareness about the struggles of mental health and how everyone can do something to help. This year’s campaign is based off of #mentalillnessfeelslike where people that suffer from mental health issues are encouraged to take to social media to share their own stories. This campaign encourages individuals to share stories with the goal being to show others that they are not alone in their feelings and their symptoms.
For more on how you can contribute to raising awareness this month we encourage you to visit Mental Health America’s website.
Raising Awareness For Lupus
Lupus Awareness Month is observed during May to increase the public’s knowledge on this disease. Lupus is an unpredictable, chronic autoimmune disease that affects different parts of the body. At Dental Associates of Delaware we want to do our part by sharing some information on this disease:
- Ninety percent of the people who develop lupus are women, though men can also develop lupus and their disease can affect some organs more severely.
- Most often, lupus develops between ages 15 and 44. However, between 10 and 20 percent of cases develop during childhood and these cases can evolve into serious health complications more rapidly.
- Lupus is not contagious and cannot be “given” to another person.
- Lupus can affect any organ system of the body, including the heart, kidneys, lungs, blood, joints and skin.
